Parable Franchise Conference a Success

May 28, 2008—Parable Franchising hosted the first standalone conference for franchisees May 14-15 in Nashville, Tennessee. Centered on the theme Re:STORE, the conference focused on building community and strengthening stores.

"There was a real sense of unity amongst the franchisees—that together, we are Parable," commented Rod Huff, Parable vice president of franchising. "We believe franchising is the future for independent Christian retailers, and the success of this year's conference confirmed the direction we are headed."

The conference offered a mix of industry insight, roundtable discussions and artist/author appearances. Franchisees were also introduced to a number of franchise-only programs, including management reporting services, new buying programs and a new customer-research service.

Stores identified roundtable discussions as a highlight of the event.

"Hearing what has worked in other stores helps us focus our own efforts," explained Lorraine Valk of Banner Books Parable Christian Store in St. Joseph, Michigan. "We came away with new ideas for merchandising our DVD Department and refreshing our gifts, and are already moving ahead to implement changes."

The conference included special appearances by artists, authors and industry experts.

The first day featured a "State of the Industry" panel discussion with ECPA President Mark Kuyper, CBA President Bill Anderson and GMA President John Styll, along with a keynote message from Jim Cymbala and music by David Phelps. Other artists appearing throughout the week included Matthew West, Warren Barfield, Crabb Revival and Aaron and Amanda Crabb. A special screening of the upcoming film Fireproof on the final night capped the weekend.

"We've built the Parable franchise upon the belief that we can do more together than alone, and our annual gatherings are an important time to encourage and learn from one another," says Parable CEO Steve Potratz. "This past week was just what we needed."

Franchisees have traditionally met the weekend prior to ICRS. Hosting a separate conference allows for a longer meeting and increased store owner interaction. Parable will continue to host annual all-store meetings at ICRS for both members and franchisees.
